Your Writing Coach Dr. Carlsen understands the power of words in communicating ideas effectively - with brevity, clarity, and simplicity. An independent writing/editing consultant for over 16 years, he has taught courses in professional writing for psychologists at The Chicago School and The Illinois School of Professional Psychology - Meadows Campus. In addition, he has taught business communications courses for managers and supervisors through the City of Chicago Department of Consulting and Training Services and Chicago City-Wide College. He has also worked as a free-lance writer and editor to help numerous individual clients achieve success with their own writing projects.
Your Life Coach An experienced coach, mentor, teacher, and therapist, Dr. Carlsen understands the challenges of living with purpose and finding personal fulfillment. Your Internship Coach Dr. Carlsen knows what it takes to match with top-qualify internship training. A 1992 candidate, he submitted applications to 18 APA-accredited sites across the country, completing 11 interviews and receiving 7 offers on Match Day 1993. He selected the internship at The Ohio State University Counseling and Consultation Service in Columbus - his first choice of sites - where he also served on the center’s intern selection committee.
Since 1995, Dr. Carlsen has worked with doctoral psychology students to improve their chances of getting the internships they want. Each fall, he offers personal coaching to help students write more persuasive applications and sharpen their interviewing skills. He also presents his two-session workshop series on "Writing Effective Applications and "Conducting Persuasive Interviews". For applicants who want a more in-dept approach to self-understanding and personal marketing, he offers personal study guides. A graduate of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, he received his doctorate in clinical psychology in 1994 and was licensed by the State of Illinois in 1996.
Dr. Carlsen brings a wealth of experience to help students streamline the application and interviewing processes As a staff psychologist with the Chicago Department of Public Health, Division of Mental Health, he trains and supervises pre-doctoral psychology interns and externs, helping them to formulate realistic training goals and regularly assessing their progress. He also participates in the Division's annual intern interviewing and selection process.
